“Dialogues in Toulouse #2.”
A few words about Toulouse
The city of Toulouse, the capital of the French region of Occitanie, is an ancient city with two thousand years of history, located in the southwest of France, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, on the Garonne River.
In Toulouse, French and Occitan languages are in common use, in which all street names are duplicated and subway stops are announced (although almost no one speaks Occitan anymore).
The historic center of Toulouse is relatively small – 2-2.5 km in diameter – and it is easy to get around on foot.
The population of Toulouse is about 500 thousand.
Toulouse has a very convenient metro, with two lines A and B, with small fully autonomous trains (no driver’s cabin). It takes 15-20 minutes to get anywhere in the city by metro. Trains run every few minutes. The same ticket allows you to take the T2 streetcar connecting Blagnac Airport and Palais de Justice metro station, on line B (see map).
Uber and other cab apps also operate in Toulouse.
Toulouse is famous for its beautiful medieval architecture, in which pink bricks prevail (for which it is called Pink City), as well as for its parks and promenades.
The climate in Toulouse is warm, with temperatures rarely dropping to zero in winter and summers can be very hot. In June, daytime temperatures are 20-25C.
Where will it all take place?
All the activities of the school will be held in the heart of the city, near the central square Capitole, in a hotel called Novotel Toulouse Centre Wilson, located at the following address
We will have a huge two-level meeting space, a restaurant, a café and much more. Novotel Toulouse Centre Wilson also, of course, has a hotel stock where participants can book their accommodation.
The nearest metro station, Jean-Jaurès (line A & B), where the A and B lines meet is a 2-minute walk away.
Where to settle?
Attention: the dates of the School are from the morning of June 14, 2024 to the evening of June 16, 2024. We also invite everyone to spend June 17 together, dedicating this day to relaxing and walking around Toulouse. If booking on your own, book your accommodation from June 13 (settlement usually in the afternoon) to June 18 (check-out usually before 11:00).
Apartments or hotels in the city
Since Toulouse is a relatively small city and the venue is located close to the metro station and city center, participants can choose to stay in individual hotels or apartments on booking.com or airbnb.com.
In this case, it is possible to stay in a group of 3-5 people, which will significantly reduce accommodation costs.
We recommend choosing accommodation near Carmes, Jean Jaures, Jeanne d’Arc, Compans-Caffarelli metro stations.
Please feel free to contact us for assistance and with questions – we would be more than happy to help you with your home selection!
How do you get there?
In Toulouse, you can get to almost any place conveniently and quickly by public transportation. All public transportation: metro, buses and streetcars – is paid for with a cardboard card of the Tisseo system, which is sold in special terminals at each metro station. It is advantageous to buy a card for 10 trips.
How to buy a ticket at a Tisséo terminal
1- The Tisséo ticketing terminal looks like this:
2. On its screen, you should select the option on the left where it says Tisséo:
3. Then you need to select the type of ticket. You can buy a card for one trip or for 10 trips:
4. You can pay for your purchase by inserting your bank card into the terminal or using contactless method (both card and phone are suitable) by putting the card or phone to the place in the lower right corner of the machine where it says “paiement sans contact”.
5. When the payment takes place, the card will fall into the tray at the bottom of the machine. It must be inserted into the turnstile with the red side facing up. On the back the turnstile will print the usage information and report the number of remaining trips (saldo).
Cab
Also, if necessary, you can use cab services Uber, Bolt, Freenow, etc. Approximate price of a cab:
- From Airport to Novotel Toulouse Centre Wilson and nearby hotels: €33-35
- From Matabiau train station to Novotel Toulouse Centre Wilson: €8-10
